Lessons From My Sabbath Month | Week 6: Fully Integrated: Discernment and the Sacred Pace

Threshold of Integration
Take a quiet, deep exhale right where you are, my friend. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears, unclench your jaw, and give yourself permission to simply be in this exact moment.
Over the past five weeks, we have traveled a holy road together. We examined what happens when we step out of constant motion, navigate the withdrawal of the hustle, clear out the scanning mind, and honor the sacred command to play.
Now we arrive at the threshold of becoming fully integrated: The United Life.
This is where the fragments—Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength—come together in divine alignment. It is where survival mode officially expires, and we step back into our daily duties without putting that heavy emotional armor back on. Moving from the grind into spiritual rest doesn't mean escaping responsibility; it means learning how to carry life from a place of wholeness.
To understand what walking in this fully integrated space actually looks like, I want to take you back to a morning walk I took in Raleigh, North Carolina, during the Antoinette Brown Society gathering with 70 remarkable clergywomen.
Weaponized Endurance vs. Discernment
Early one morning, I set out on a solo walk. As I made my way along the trail, I encountered a path that gave me pause. I was alone in an unfamiliar city, and the terrain ahead looked isolated and unsafe for a solo walker.
In years past, my "weaponized endurance"—that old habit of pushing through discomfort just to prove I could handle it—might have urged me to force my way through anyway. Instead, I listened to the quiet wisdom of my spirit and decided to turn around. Pivoting didn't mean I stopped walking; I simply redirected my steps toward a path where I felt safe, grounded, and clear-headed.
The next day, I helped lead a group walk. A fellow clergywoman—an experienced hiker who knew the terrain well—led a group down the more challenging path I had stepped away from the day before. Meanwhile, I led a small group down the gentle, manageable path I had explored.
Forced Endurance (Survival State) | Fully Integrated Discernment (Aligned State) |
Forcing your way down depleting paths to prove strength | Having the spiritual maturity to pivot toward peace |
Comparing your capacity to someone else's journey | Honoring your personal boundaries without shame |
Leading from exhaustion and over-extension | Leading from lived wisdom and gentle rest |
The Path to a Fully Integrated Life and Sacred Pace
Whether you have moved to the point of practicing a weekly or annual Sabbath month, as you step back into heavy daily responsibilities, you might wonder: How do I keep from falling back into frantic hurry and hyper-vigilance?
Consider the simple mechanics of human walking. Unlike running—where both feet leave the ground in a sprint—in walking, one foot is always grounded on the earth while the other moves forward. This is your pattern for a fully integrated life:
Keep One Foot Grounded: Stay firmly rooted in your Sabbath practices—your quiet mornings, your intentional stillness, your boundaries, and your trust that God is managing the world.
Let One Foot Move Forward: Allow the other foot to carry you into your work, your leadership, and your care for others with grace rather than grind.
Walk in Your Sacred Pace: Recognize that when you step into your duties anchored in peace, you cannot be swept away by the hustle.
The Altar Call for Your Week
You are no longer running a race in survival mode; you are walking in wholeness, freedom, and divine authority. When you refuse to put the heavy armor back on, you make sacred room for true intimacy with God and yourself (IN TO ME SEE). Step onto your path today knowing that you are held, whole, and completely safe in His hands.
🛑 Reflecting & Applying Today
Ponder: Where in your life have you been using "weaponized endurance" to force your way down a path that lacks peace? What would it look like to pivot toward a gentler, more aligned pace today?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for bringing my heart, soul, mind, and strength into one fully integrated space. Teach me how to walk in Your sacred pace—keeping one foot grounded in Your peace while the other moves forward in my duties. Forgive me for forcing my way through exhaustion, and grant me the wisdom to pivot when You call me to rest. Amen.
Practice: Today, identify one boundary or task where you normally "push through" out of habit. Give yourself permission to pause, pivot, or choose the gentler path without guilt or explanation.
Play: Take a 15-minute "Sacred Pace Walk." Step outside without a timer, a destination, or headphones. Walk at half your normal speed, feeling each foot touch the earth, and simply notice the beauty around you.
