Lessons From My Sabbath Month: Stripping Off the Heavy Emotional Armor

The Downpour That Changes Everything
Take a slow breath right where you are, my friend. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears, unclench your jaw, and give yourself permission to simply be in this exact moment.
When we journey through a season of reflection, it is easy to assume that we can simply take our new insights and pack them into our old routines. We try to carry our quiet heart into our noisy work, while still wearing the same invisible emotional armor we built during years of survival.
But a fully integrated life doesn't work by adding peace on top of old exhaustion. Sometimes, life forces a complete reset to usher us into true spiritual rest.
Just the other day, I went out for my morning walk. Mid-route, without much warning, the sky opened up into a heavy rainstorm. Within minutes, I was completely soaked—my clothes grew heavy, drenched, and weighed down by the downpour.
By the time I made it back home, there was no patching things up or trying to stay dry retroactively. The water had saturated every single layer. I had to take off those soaked clothes completely and start all over.
Isn't that what happens when we try to carry our old survival patterns into a new season of grace? We wear heavy layers of over-responsibility, hyper-vigilance, and constant performance until life literally drenches us in fatigue. We try to press on in wet, heavy coats, wondering why every step feels like a chore.
My Sabbath month was that rainstorm. It soaked through my old patterns and made one thing clear: I couldn't just dry off the old emotional armor and put it back on to go to work. I had to strip it off entirely and step into fresh garments—garments of presence, ease, and divine trust.
The Paradigm Shift: Heavy Layers vs. Divine Trust
Survival mode is an incredible coping mechanism when you are in the thick of a storm. That emotional armor protected you when doors were shut, when you had to manage crises alone, and when you carried heavy burdens for everyone around you. We honor that past strength.
But my friend, you don't need winter coats in the middle of spring. Carrying old armor into a season of peace will only weigh you down and disrupt your alignment with a divine rhythm.
Waterlogged Armor (Survival State) | Fresh Garments (Aligned State) |
Pressing forward in heavy, drenched layers of exhaustion | Stripping off over-responsibility to start fresh in grace |
Performing and producing to prove your value | Resting in your inherent worth and divine identity |
Hyper-vigilantly scanning every room to manage details | Surrendering control and trusting God with the outcome |
The Path to Stripping Off Heavy Emotional Armor
You don't have to fix or dry out the soaked clothes—you just have to take them off. Here is what stripping off those heavy layers looks like in daily life:
Stop the Performance: Recognize that you no longer have to prove your worth through endless production or constant availability.
Drop the Hyper-Vigilance: Release the urge to scan every room for threats or manage every microscopic detail for everyone around you.
Allow Yourself to Be Renewed: Change your garments, take a slow breath, and accept the gift of a completely fresh start without an ounce of guilt.
The Altar Call for Your Week
You don't need armor for a battle that is already over. When you lay down the heavy, waterlogged layers of the hustle, you step out of self-defense and enter into true intimacy with God and yourself (IN TO ME SEE). Allow His grace to clothe you in light, dry garments of peace today.
🛑 Reflecting & Applying Today
Ponder: What heavy, waterlogged layer of armor or hustle are you still wearing out of habit? What would it feel like to strip it off and start fresh today?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the storms that expose what no longer serves me. Give me the courage to strip off the heavy emotional armor of over-responsibility and step into the light, dry garments of Your peace. Amen.
Practice: Identify one task or habit today that feels like wearing heavy, wet armor (e.g., answering emails late at night, double-checking everyone's work, or saying "yes" when you want to say "no"). Lay it down today and leave it off.
Play: Do something completely light that requires zero preparation or production. Put on clean, comfortable clothes, sip a glass of tea or water, and sit in absolute quiet for 10 minutes. Celebrate the freshness of a new start.
